--Journal Week 11--
Whoops! I'm here. Have no fear! For those of you who are interested, prom was very awesome! For those who are more worried about Physics, here's what happened this week!
Presentations have started and so I was taught a rather intriguing lesson on the dynamics of curveballs and knuckleballs by Hogan and 'Rard. It also helped compact our knowledge by actually trying to throw a knuckleball. I'm sure I made everyone feel just a bit more competent since I couldn't even land the ball in 'Rard's glove. Wow, so proud. ;] I couldn't attend Friday's class unfortunately, because I was planting trees with Science Club for Arbor Day. Hopefully Bendi took good notes!
We'll be presenting this week ourselves, so you'll have a run down of how it goes by next weekend. Wish us luck!

Blogging like a marathon runner racing down the hill
--Lesson Plan--
Alright, here's everything you need to know about our project:
Standards
D. Analyze the essential ideas about the structure and composition of the universe.
> Analyze the Big Bang Theory's use of gravitation and nuclear reaction to explain a possible origin of the universe.
> Compare the use of visual, radio, and x-ray telescopes to collect data regarding the structure and evolution of the universe.
> Correlate the use of the special theory of relativity and the life of a star.
22 Pa. Code, Ch. 4, Appendix B, Sec. 3.4
Objectives
> The objectives of this lesson is to teach what black holes are, how it's theoried that they were formed, and how to use the Schwarzschild Radius to find out how much an object must collapse to become a black hole. We want the students to understand how scientists find black holes and how much of our knowledge is based on theories.
Timeline
Period 1: Hand out outline, give lecture. Start lab.
Period 2: Finish lab. Give open-notes quiz.
Assessment
A 10 question quiz will be given and the notes that the students take will be allowed on the desktops for reference. A lab will be performed to cement the knowledge of black holes, and will be added with their quiz grade. The two grades will be averaged and submitted. We also created 5 multiple choice questions for the Physics final.

Welcome back. Glad you could make it. So for an update in our project, Bendi and I worked out a few details.
Thing #1: We're only going to do the lab with the bowl and the latex sheet.
Reason Being: We thought it would be too much to jam a lesson, 2 labs, and a quiz all in two periods. So we're being nice to our peers and only performing one lab.
Thing #2: This is our rough sketch of the outline that the students are going to be given to take their own notes on...

'ello, 'ello. Hard to believe we've been at this project for 8 weeks now, isn't it? Well, good news is we've been putting those weeks to good use! In this post, I want to restate the PA Academic Standards we'll be covering and the details of the labs we want to have the students perform. So first off...

Materials:
*round bowl, roughly 10 cm in diameter
*tape
*package of small round beads (like the ones you find in the cake decoration section of a grocery store)
*3 cm ball bearing (the eraser end of a pencil can substitute)
*Latex sheet
**round balloons
**aluminum foil
**balance
**cloth (or flexible plastic) tape measure

Greetings and salutations. This week we had our teacher meeting and I for one think it went rather well. We have some pretty sweet final sources [which you can view in my next blog entry] and I think we're off to a really good start. We've shortened our timeline down to 2 periods instead of 3. The lab(s) probably won't be epicly long, so the quiz can be taken in that same second period. The students are still going to be required to take their own notes within the outline that's handed out. All in all, I'm thinking this is going to be a good lesson. :]

Movin' to the country...gonna find a lotta black holes...

Hi zerr. Well, we're starting to sum up the research portion of this process. Next week we'll have the details of our lesson plan worked out, along with the lab and quiz made up. But before we start wrapping everything in a nice, neat little package, I have a few more sources I came across that look pretty cool.

--Journal Week 5--
Welcome back. So we're getting closer to the presentation date and I've been putting together a rough plan of how we're going to go about teaching all of this information. And if we've got three periods to teach it, we had better be thorough. Here's my thoughts:
1st Period - Actually teaching. We'll present a PowerPoint on the essential information of black holes. To make sure my classmates understand these notes, they're going to take them on their own. I learned in my Psychology class that the best way to ensure students retain the information is if it's organized and they copy it down for themselves. They'll be given a one to two page outline and reminded that the notes taken then will be used for the quiz the day after.
2nd Period - applying the concept time! Bendi and I are going to construct a lab for the students to perform, which will hopefully reinforce the theories and general ideas behind black holes. Some of this theorization may also be used on the quiz.
3rd Period - quiz. I'm not thinking it will take very long. One page, front and back I'm assuming. Just a general assessment of what they took away from this lesson. And hopefully there will be more incentive to take more detailed notes if there's the indirect result of grades at the other end.
But that's how I'm seeing this presentation going, roughly. I imagine it'll run pretty smooth once we get the little details worked out. Any questions or concerns, I'm always available in the comment box. ;]

*sings*...and my blog's due in an hour... Hi there! On this installment of the Blog Hole, you'll get the weekly update. And what is the update, you ask? I got a 94% on my test! Yay! :D
Oh, wait...update on black holes...yeah. My bad. Mkay, what's new with the celestial universe. I was kind of curious to know if there are any black holes in our very own galaxy (the Milky Way), so I did some hunting. And I found one!
It's called Sag A* located in the Sagittarius constellation.

This one was kind of a slow week. Between County Chorus rehearsals, performance practices, and a Physics test to study for, the black holes were put on the back burner for a little bit. Bendi was helpful in my academic absence, finding an example of a lesson plan that we can possibly learn from.
